I have to say, Apple Music is a really well-designed app. There is a lot in the app — it’s jam-packed — but Apple has done a really good job of making the app easy to navigate.

It’s hard for me to over-stress how much I like For You. From the very beginning, the recommendations in playlists and albums that the app showed me were dead-on accurate, reflecting my various musical interests.

Will it replace Spotify for diehard subscribers? That’s a more complicated question […]. For now, however, the For Me section alone has made me excited about music for the first time in a long time. And that’s a good thing.

Would I pay $10 a month — $120 a year — to use it? My answer is a tentative yes, with some caveats. Apple has built a handsome, robust app and service that goes well beyond just offering a huge catalog of music by providing many ways to discover and group music for a very wide range of tastes and moods. But it’s also uncharacteristically complicated by Apple standards, with everything from a global terrestrial radio station to numerous suggested playlists for different purposes in different places. And the company offers very little guidance on how to navigate its many features.

My biggest disappointment with Apple Music is that, unlike apps like SoundHound, it has no lyrics. Apple says it’s working on adding that feature.

My first impression of Apple Music is that it’s the most full-featured streaming music app I’ve seen — and heard — and the first I’d consider paying for. But it may overwhelm some users, and I’ll need to live with it more before I can reach final conclusions.

‘Sterretje doet het niet’

The Loop is zoals verwacht voornamelijk positief over Apple Music.

I’m damned impressed. Apple Music is a quality service, with the right mix of human curation and algorithms to help users figure out exactly what they want to hear. I can only imagine that the service will only get better from here. The more I use it, like/dislike songs, the better it will know me.

There’s not a lot to write about in the “bad” section, but a couple of nitpicks did grab my attention. When playing a radio station, there is a little star on the left side of the screen. If you tap the star, you have three choices: Play more like this; Play less like this; and Add to iTunes Wishlist. Easy to understand, but it only works about 50 percent of the time. I tap the star and tap one of the selections and it does nothing. And odd little bug in the system that I’m sure can be fixed.

The other thing I would like to do is to be able to like a song after it’s already played. Pandora has a feature like that and I find it handy.

‘Beetje weinig interactiemogelijkheden’

Moreover, the only place where fans can interact is the comments section of each post, cutting out a major part of what Apple hopes will be a new music ecosystem: fandom. While it’s possible fans would share music individually – with Apple Music’s many options to post to text, email, Twitter and Facebook – the absence of fans’ voices on “Connect” makes it more like a supplement to a social network than an exciting music-discovery platform.

The “New” tab is also where you can peruse playlists made by Apple Music Editors by genre, ones curated to activities and by expert curators. The major drawback to these curated lists is the unnecessary step of clicking into each one to see the brief description of what’s ahead.

With its vast selection of music and smartly curated playlists and radio, Apple Music is robust enough to compete with, and possibly supplant, Spotify and Pandora as the go-to service for music fans.

The app’s sure thing will most likely be its Beats 1 radio with its unique input from artists. But Apple will need to work the most on “Connect,” which ought to premiere some exclusive content from big artists early.
